The Curative Powers of The Midwest

By Alana Johnson

Four days after my ex-boyfriend left me for another girl, I hopped on a plane to visit my family in Yankton, South Dakota. Surprisingly, these 7 days spent in a small mid western town cured my broken heart beyond belief. As you journey through my thoughts and feelings experienced throughout the week, I encourage you to listen to the songs listed. Each song expresses what I hope the pictures capture.

The final photo taken in South Dakota, me throwing away my ex’s ring.

I am insanely grateful for this trip. Being in my dad’s hometown, there was family and friends no matter where we went. The feeling of a small town like Yankton, South Dakota is unlike anything else. You sense peace, harmony, and unity all around you.
Loss is what shapes us. How we react, adapt, and learn from loss makes us who we are. Whenever you’re confused or upset because of loss-I suggest traveling. Breaking your routine for a few days. Allowing yourself to see how different every corner of the world is. Opening your mind. Accepting the change.
